United States – Japan Trade Agreement Begins January 1, 2020 1-7-2020 On December 30, 2019, the Federal Register published the trade agreement between the U.S. and Japan. The agreement went into effect January 1, 2020. According to the fact sheet, once implemented, over 90% of U.S. food and agricultural products imported into Japan will either be duty free or receive preferential tariff access. The United States will provide tariff elimination or reduction on 42 tariff lines for agricultural imports from Japan. In addition, the U.S. will reduce or eliminate tariffs on certain industrial goods from Japan. Separate agreements have been reached on priority areas of digital trade, pork, dairy, and beef.
