New Reporting Requirements for Mercury Importers/Exporters

Beginning in 2019, importers and exporters of mercury and items in which mercury is intentionally included, along with companies which perform domestic manufacturing, distribution, and storage functions pertaining to mercury or mercury-added products, will be required to electronically report every three years the amount of mercury they handle and certain use-specific information. No exemptions for FDA regulated products will be allowed.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has provided a list of commodities, subject to change:

  • Batteries
  • Dental amalgam
  • Formulated products
  • Lighting, lamps and bulbs
  • Measuring instruments
  • Pump seals
  • Switches, relays, sensors and valves
  • Miscellaneous mercury-added products

The EPA has indicated they will require subject reporting to be made through agency-provided, web-based reporting software to EPA's Central Data Exchange.
