DSV Solutions Peaks at The Right Time For Under Armour

‘DSV responds flexibly to the rapid growth of our sports brand’

Under Armour, the world’s fastest-growing sportswear brand, is outsourcing its warehousing activities to DSV Solutions in Venlo, The Netherlands, for another three years. “We’ve just extended the contract because we really appreciate the service, price/quality ratio and above all the flexibility we receive from DSV,” says Frank van Overbeek, operations manager Europe at Under Armour. The multinational enterprise Under Armour has been producing high-quality branded sports apparel and footwear since 1996, with the mission ‘to make all athletes better’. “This includes recreational athletes too, just like myself,” claims Van Overbeek. He explains that Under Armour, which was founded by ex-American footballer Kevin Plank from the University of Maryland, first got to know DSV Solutions in 2010. We met with DSV in our search for a new partner and they seemed to offer the best price/quality ratio on paper, and we had a good feeling about the company and our contact people. And that feeling proved to be right, because within a very short space of time – just three to four months –  DSV had moved all our inventory to the warehouse in Venlo and also got the pick-pack operation up and running for our orders. Furthermore, DSV’s IT team supported the Under Armour IT department in Baltimore on the installation of our Manhattan warehouse management system and even suggested areas for improvement.” 

Short lead times

Van Overbeek: “DSV has demonstrated in practice that they are willing and able to respond to our needs by providing extra manpower, and that’s extremely important to us. They also respond flexibly to our company’s exceptionally rapid growth.” Under Armour and DSV Solutions hold an operations review meeting every month. “René Kruijs, our logistics manager, and I meet with contract manager Johan Gijsbers and operations manager Siebe Huisman from DSV to discuss KPIs, planning, ongoing activities and any issues. One of the KPIs we talk about is ‘inbound throughput time’. DSV processes the inbound flow of goods within 24 hours, fully in line with our requirements.”

Van Overbeek is also impressed by the very short lead times that DSV achieves for Under Armour’s three different order flows, namely to wholesalers, to distributors and via e-commerce. At DSV Solutions, they have a clear understanding of what Under Armour needs in terms of service, according to Van Overbeek: “Both our companies have similar corporate cultures which makes for very smooth collaboration. We’ve extended the contract for another three years. That says it all about our confidence in DSV.”
