Dry Season Hits Panama Canal, Restricted Transit Due to Low Water Levels

The dry season has hit the Panama Canal, causing canal water levels to drop.

Dry Season Hits Panama Canal, Restricted Transit Due to Low Water Levels

The Panama Canal Authority has imposed a transit draft restriction on Neopanamax locks, which will go into effect April 30, 2019.

The restriction reduces the draft to 13.41 meters (44 feet) Tropical Fresh Water (TFW) from the standard draft of 15.24 meters (55 feet) TFW. If, after April 30, a vessel exceeds 13.41 meters TFW, they will be required to offload cargo.

How does this affect me?

These restrictions could lead to capacity issues, causing delays in containers being loaded on a vessel, especially those that are overweight. It could also cause your cargo to be moved to a vessel that does not travel through the Panama Canal, which could have longer transit times.

To find out if these restrictions will affect your cargo, please reach out to your DSV representative.
